Airlines may deny boarding if your passport is within 6 months of expiration. A valid return Air ticket is also required.
For further information concerning entry requirements, U.S. citizens may contact the Embassy of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, 2220 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, tel. (202) 319-2660 or The Bahamas consulate in Miami or New York.
Visas are not required for U.S. citizens for stays up to eight months.
Money Matters
The Bahamian dollar (B$) is the local currency and is pegged to the U.S. dollar, meaning they have equivalent value. U.S. dollars are also widely accepted across The Bahamas. There are no restrictions on bringing foreign currency into the country. Most large hotels and stores accept traveler’s checks, but personal checks may be less reliable. It’s a good idea to exchange enough money for airport expenses and transportation before you leave home.
For convenience, carry some small bills or loose change for tipping and public transport. Keep small denominations separate from larger bills to make them easily accessible and to minimize risk.

ATMs are widely available throughout Nassau, and most use the Cirrus (800/424-7787; www.mastercard.com) and PLUS (800/843-7587; www.visa.com) networks. Take the following steps to make the most of your credit card(s) while traveling to the Bahamas:
- Notify your issuing banks the dates you will be traveling to the Bahamas before you leave to ensure access to your funds.
- Check with your issuing banks to see whether your ATM or credit card is subject to daily spending or withdrawal restrictions while abroad.
- Be sure you know your PIN for your debit or credit cards if you need to get local currency from ATMs worldwide.
With 24-hour ATMs, traveler’s checks are less necessary, but they can be a useful backup if you don’t mind showing identification each time. Traveler’s checks are available at most banks.
As of January 1, 2015, a 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced in The Bahamas, applying to most goods and services. Exports are exempt or zero-rated.

Sun Bathing
To protect your skin, avoid sunbathing between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Apply sunscreen regularly, even on overcast days, as the sun can be strong despite the breeze. Note that topless sunbathing and swimming in public is illegal. However, more secluded beaches may offer privacy for those who wish to sunbathe as they prefer.

Be Smart - Be Safe
Though The Bahamas generally has a low crime rate, it’s important to stay vigilant. Most incidents occur in areas of Nassau not frequented by tourists. Criminals sometimes pose as taxi drivers to offer rides and then rob or assault passengers. Always use licensed taxis with yellow license plates, and secure your villa and car when you’re away. For added safety, we have a security guard on the property at all times.
